Brazilian Woman Disappears After Speedboat Collision in Venice
Gabriela Querino Vanishes After Her Vessel Collided with a Water Taxi in the Venetian Lagoon
In the early hours of Saturday, the 12th, a speedboat carrying a Brazilian-Italian couple collided with a water taxi in the Tessera canal, Venice. The accident resulted in the disappearance of Gabriela Querino Elorriaga, 26, while her husband, Sean Michieli, 25, was rescued in serious condition and later confirmed brain dead at the hospital.
Accident in Tessera Canal
The collision occurred in the section connecting the Venice lagoon to the local airport. The couple's vessel sank shortly after being hit, throwing Gabriela into the water. Italian authorities initiated continuous diving and sweeping operations in the area.
Victim and Husband's Identity
Gabriela, originally from Ribeirão Preto (SP), had been living in Italy for about two years and married Sean in June of this year. She was preparing the necessary documentation to work in fishing alongside her husband, who comes from a family of fishermen and practiced the activity in the region.
Search and Rescue Operations
Teams of Italian firefighters, police, and divers have been conducting searches for over 24 hours. The submerged vessel and some of Gabriela's personal belongings were located, but there is still no trace of the young woman. Authorities plan helicopter overflights and the use of jet skis to broaden the search.
Family's Reaction and Itamaraty's Support
Gabriela's mother, Gisele Elorriaga, stated that she still hopes to find her daughter alive. Itamaraty, through the Consulate-General in Milan, is monitoring the case and providing direct assistance to the family members and local authorities.
Italian Authorities' Procedures
The water taxi driver followed routine procedures for the accident investigation, while Italian investigators work to reconstruct the dynamics of the collision. Gabriela's husband remains hospitalized in Mestre, where he underwent surgery for a traumatic brain injury.
