Brazil returns to the Women's South American Volleyball Championship as the favorite, now facing the added pressure of securing an Olympic spot for Los Angeles 2028. The tournament, held at the Maracanãzinho arena, features six national teams and will be contested in a single round-robin format, with the champion earning direct qualification to the Olympic Games.

Brazil and the Expectation of Hegemony

With 15 South American Championship titles since 1995, the green-and-yellow squad is already considered dominant in the region. Their most recent official competition was the Women's Nations League, where Brazil took home the silver medal. The expectation is that the team, led by José Roberto Guimarães, will reinforce its technical superiority and maintain its winning tradition.

The Main Rivals: Argentina and Colombia

According to commentators such as Fabi Alvim and Marco Freitas, Argentina and Colombia are the strongest contenders. Argentina relies on world-class players like Bianca Cugno, while head coach Facundo Morando will coach Fluminense in the next edition of the Women's Superliga. Colombia, meanwhile, features Brazilian coaching staff, such as Guilherme Schmitz, who are well acquainted with Brazil's playing style.

Game Strategy and Preparation

To secure victory, the head coach emphasizes the need to close out matches decisively and avoid leaving anything to chance. The focus will be on maintaining dominance in every contest, particularly against opponents deemed less challenging. Preparations include fitness tests and performance evaluations for the squad that will take part in the 2027 World Championship and the Olympics.

Roster and Call-up Changes

The 14-player roster for the Olympic Qualifier includes the return of Gabi Guimarães, who had been sidelined by a lower-back injury, alongside new additions such as opposite hitter Sabrina and setter Vivian. The coach also called up Tainara and Nyeme, who return after missing the VNL for Brazil. Meanwhile, Kisy, Larissa Besen, and Macris were left off the squad following the decision of José Roberto Guimarães.

Schedule and Tournament Importance

The competition begins on Tuesday, September 8, with an opener against Venezuela. The matches follow in sequence: Peru (September 9), Colombia (September 10), Chile (September 12), and Argentina (September 13). The title and the Olympic berth will be awarded to the team that accumulates the highest number of points over the five rounds, with tiebreakers based on sets, points, and head-to-head results.

What Is at Stake for Brazil

Brazil needs to avoid the wear and tear that could lead to an Olympic playoff tournament, something that has occurred in past competitions. Winning the South American Championship will secure early qualification and prevent the team from facing the pressure of a last-chance repechage event. The objective is to reaffirm continental hegemony and guarantee the Brazilian national team's presence at the Los Angeles Games.
