Yellow Tariff Flag Remains for September

The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) announced on Friday (the 28th) that the electricity tariff flag will remain yellow throughout September. With this decision, the surcharge applied to consumers' electricity bills will stay in effect next month for everyone connected to the System.

How the tariff‑flag system works

The tariff‑flag system is a permanent methodology used in the electric sector to signal to consumers the real cost of power generation. It works like a traffic light, displaying different colors to indicate whether electricity production is cheaper or more expensive during a given period.

The flags typically alternate among green, yellow and red. A green flag signals favorable generation conditions, meaning no extra charge on the electricity tariff. A yellow flag serves as a caution sign, indicating less favorable generation conditions and imposing a moderate extra fee on bills. A red flag denotes a higher production cost, resulting in a larger additional charge.

Tariff application and the regulator’s role

The monthly flag designation is set by the sector’s regulatory authority, which evaluates the projected generation costs for the country, including factors such as hydro‑reservoir levels and the need to dispatch thermoelectric plants that have higher operating costs.

Maintaining the yellow flag for September means that consumers connected to the System will continue paying the extra amount defined for this signaling category. This mechanism allows consumers to adjust their electricity use to the actual generation cost, encouraging more conscious consumption during periods of lower availability or higher costs.
