Simultaneous Fires in Teresina Mobilize Firefighters and Cause Blackouts
Fire Hits MPPI Annex and Kiosks Along Rio Poti, Leading to Evacuation and Power Outages
On the afternoon of September 9, two fire incidents occurred in Teresina, one in the city center and another along the banks of the Rio Poti, mobilizing the Fire Department and interrupting power supply in part of the city.
Fire at the Public Prosecutor's Office Annex
A medium-sized fire struck an annex of the Piauí Public Prosecutor's Office building, located on Rua Álvaro Mendes, around 3 PM. The flames were brought under control by firefighters in about an hour and a half.
Evacuation of Neighboring Residence
During the operation, a neighboring residence was evacuated as a precaution, although it was not affected by the fire. Lieutenant Sebastião, from the Piauí Military Fire Department, emphasized that the measure was taken solely to ensure the safety of the residents.
Fire Along the Banks of the Rio Poti
Simultaneously, a fire along the banks of the Rio Poti, on Avenida Raul Lopes, affected kiosks installed by the roadside. The Fire Department used three water tankers to contain the flames, which had spread through the vegetation.
Power Outage and Traffic Lights Affected
The fire caused a power outage at a shopping mall on the same avenue and affected the operation of traffic lights at locations such as Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Homero, and Jóquei. Equatorial Piauí reported that over 90% of customers have already had their service restored through automation, while teams continue to work to fully restore 100% of the supply.
Authorities' Reactions and Suspicions
Lieutenant Sebastião mentioned that the area typically experiences recurring fires this time of year and that, on this occasion, there is suspicion that the fire was intentionally set. Despite the suspicion, the Fire Department will not conduct an investigation at the site, citing the frequency of such incidents.
