Arsenal makes five changes and faces Lille in Champions League
Mikel Arteta bets on Gyokeres, Merino and others to regain group leadership

Arsenal arrived at the Emirates Stadium with five changes to the starting lineup for their UEFA Champions League group stage match against Lille. Arteta’s decision follows a 2-1 victory over Leeds United and aims to maintain the offensive performance that has been evident in national squads.
Arsenal changes for the Lille match
Arteta started Viktor Gyokeres and Mikel Merino, who have stood out in recent international fixtures, alongside Bruno Guimarães, who is making his first home start. Jurrien Timber replaces Ben White on the right wing, while Eberechi Eze completes the midfield.
Players coming on the field
The five entries are Gyokeres, Merino, Guimarães, Timber and Eze. Gyokeres and Merino joined Arsenal in the last transfer window and have already scored decisive goals for their national teams. Guimarães, who came on as a substitute in the win over Leeds, is tasked with directing the midfield alongside Declan Rice, who takes the captain’s armband.
Absences and the bench
From the bench, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Ødegaard were spared. The coach also introduced two new faces: midfielder Maalik Hashi and striker Ceadach O’Neill, both yet to make an official debut for the club.
Expected performance of Lille
Lille also made five changes. Olivier Giroud, who has worn Arsenal’s shirt before, starts on the bench, while Ayase Ueda, a Japanese reinforcement, returns to the attack. Tiago Santos, injured in the knee, was replaced by Maxima Goffi. The French side enters the match with a system that prioritises the speed of forwards Hakon Arnar Haraldsson and Bakwa.
Impact on the Champions League table
With a win, Arsenal will remain on three points, equal to Barcelona, which leads Group 3. Lille, still without points, seeks its first victory to avoid the relegation zone. The outcome of the match could decide who advances to the round of sixteen and who falls behind in the competition.
