On Tuesday night, a tornado warning for Burlington County, New Jersey, was cancelled, but severe storms continued to affect the Philadelphia area. Although the severe storm warning for the Philadelphia metropolitan area expired, some severe storm alerts remained in force for parts of the Delaware Valley. These storms were characterized by heavy rain, strong winds, and frequent lightning, keeping the public alert to associated hazards.

Thousands without power in New Jersey

Strong winds from scattered storms knocked out power for more than 18,000 residences and businesses in New Jersey on Tuesday night. At 8 p.m., over 5,600 customers were without electricity. By about 9:30 p.m., the statewide outage count rose to 13,670, with roughly 3,000 outages reported in Woodbury Heights, Gloucester County. Earlier, the largest cluster of outages was concentrated in East Orange, Essex County, where 940 homes and businesses were dark. Wind gusts reached up to 60 mph, with a gust in Lower Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, hitting 70 mph, and another at Surf City Yacht Club, Ocean County, recorded at 68 mph.

Heat and the chance of storms are expected to continue on Wednesday and Thursday. Storms will form each day and generally move from northwest to southeast, influenced by a large high‑pressure ridge to the south. Atmospheric conditions will be conducive to severe storms at some point each day, especially in the afternoon and evening. All weather threats are possible across most of the region daily. The high‑pressure ridge should drift slowly southward. On Thursday, a strong cold front may cross the area and begin pushing the severe‑weather threat south, but it will still include Philadelphia and areas to its south.

Risks and impacts of severe weather

Storms can bring heavy rain, damaging winds, hail, lightning, and even an isolated tornado. The meteorology team will continue monitoring atmospheric conditions and provide updates on weather and impacts throughout the week. The possibility of isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, requiring ongoing vigilance from authorities and the public.

Relief on the horizon for the weekend

The good news is that the unstable pattern should start to dissipate on Friday, giving way to a relatively pleasant first September weekend. High temperatures are expected to hover around 80 °F (about 26‑27 °C) under partly cloudy skies and lower humidity. Forecasted highs for the next days include 84 °F (29 °C) on Wednesday and 90 °F (32 °C) on Thursday.
