Blaze at New Dock Draws Crews from Multiple States, Damages Klondike Express Vessel

A fire struck the new Whittier, Alaska, cruise terminal early Monday morning. The blaze ignited around 10:56 AM, engulfing the newly constructed $80 million dock in flames and thick smoke. The 137-foot tourism vessel Klondike Express was berthed at the pier when the fire spread to it.

How Water Was Brought to the Scene

With no operational hydrants nearby, the Anchorage and Girdwood Fire Departments had to establish a “water shuttle” operation. They utilized one fire engine and three tenders to transport 112,000 gallons of water in 10-minute cycles between the fire scene and a functional hydrant in town. The total amount of water moved was estimated at 161,000 gallons.

Impact on Vessels

The Klondike Express sustained heat, smoke, and fire damage, but no fire occurred onboard. Phillips Cruises & Tours stated that the vessel will be repaired for the upcoming sailing season. The Norwegian Jade, which was docked at the pier when the fire started, departed the scene before the flames intensified and was not affected.

Coordinated Response and Infrastructure Closure

The incident required collaboration from several agencies: the Whittier Fire Department, Anchorage Fire Department, Girdwood Fire and Rescue, LifeMed, the Coast Guard, and the Alaska Department of Public Safety. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, which connects Whittier to the interior, was closed for several hours to allow the transit of rescue teams and equipment. The tunnel reopened at 2 PM.

Consequences and Ongoing Investigations

The fire compromised approximately 70% of the dock's timber, according to a port spokesperson. The Anchorage Fire Department and the Alaskan Fire Marshal's investigation team are conducting an inquiry to determine the cause of the blaze. As of now, there are no reports of injuries.

Outlook for the Cruise Season

The terminal, which opened in September 2025, had already welcomed several cruise vessels. The season is nearing its end, but the port will continue operating, with sailings planned for the next season. The commissioning ceremony for the destroyer USS Ted Stevens, scheduled for October 3, will proceed at the Princess Cruises terminal, as announced by the city.
