Accident on Guaíba's new bridge leaves two dead and blocks the freeway

A tractor-trailer plunged from Guaíba's new bridge around 3 PM this Sunday, killing two people and blocking BR-290 (Freeway) at the entrance to Porto Alegre. The accident interrupted the main access to the capital and the Grêmio Arena, causing detours and congestion.

According to the Federal Highway Police, the tractor-trailer was traveling in the Guaíba-Porto Alegre direction when the semi-trailer broke through the protective barrier and plunged from the bridge's still-unfinished ramp. The truck's cabin remained suspended over the ramp, while the trailer overturned onto three lanes of the Freeway, in the direction of the Coast.

Fatalities

Firefighters confirmed that the 61-year-old driver and a 38-year-old passenger died at the scene, trapped in the wreckage. As of the last update, the victims' names had not been released.

Freeway Blockage and Alternative Routes

The freeway was completely blocked in the direction of the Coast. The concessionaire CCR ViaSul advised drivers to redouble their attention and seek alternative routes, indicating detours via Sertório Avenue and Guaíba's old bridge. Traffic began to be released shortly before 6 PM, but congestion reached approximately three kilometers.

Investigation into the Cause

Verification of the tachograph disc revealed that the vehicle was traveling at over 80 km/h in a section with a maximum speed of 50 km/h. The causes of the incident are still being investigated by teams from the Civil Police, PRF, General Institute of Forensics, and Military Brigade.

Concessionaire's Response and Safety Measures

ViaSul activated its Operational Control Center at 2:52 PM and sent operations and rescue teams to the scene. In a statement, the company reported that the incident impacts traffic and that teams remain on-site to attend to the occurrence.
