The Whitney Museum is organizing a new exhibition dedicated to Minnie Evans' most remarkable paintings. The show comes just over 50 years after the artist became one of the first Black women to have a solo exhibition at the prestigious museum. The event seeks to bring together works that highlight the uniqueness and transportive power of her art, reaffirming her place in the history of visual arts.

Evans' career unfolded within a context shaped by debates surrounding the classification of her artistic output. The term "outsider art" was coined relatively recently, in 1972, when art historian Roger Cardinal used it as the title of his book, introducing the concept to the English-speaking world. Since then, the vocabulary used to describe creations that emerge beyond the conventional boundaries of the art world has been the subject of intense discussion among critics and historians.

The use of the "outsider" label sparks controversy regarding its legitimacy and applicability. The central question is whether it is truly justified to use such a term to define works produced outside the traditional structures of the art system. Furthermore, there are other competing terms used to categorize these works, such as "naive art." These debates reflect the difficulty of framing creations that do not follow standard academic or institutional norms but, as in Evans' case, achieve recognition and visibility in prestigious institutions like the Whitney.
