A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Scotia Sea region in the early hours of this Friday, August 22, 2026, at 05:22, Brasília time. Preliminary data released by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicate that the tremor occurred at a considered shallow depth, but with a minor estimated impact alert.

Technical details of the tremor

According to the detailed technical sheet provided by the USGS, the epicenter of the seismic event was located specifically in the Scotia Sea. The depth of the seismic focus, the point where the tremor originates, was calculated at 10 kilometers below the surface. Tremors occurring at depths of up to 70 kilometers are generally classified as shallow.
