The month of September highlights a theme that demands collective attention through campaigns focused on awareness, prevention, and the value of life. The initiative aims to broaden the debate on emotional distress, warning signs, and the importance of listening, support, and seeking professional help.

Origin and expansion of the campaign

The campaign exists globally and was inspired by the Yellow Ribbon movement, created in the United States by the family of a young man who died by suicide at age 17. In Brazil, the mobilization involves entities such as the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry, the Federal Council of Medicine, and the Life Valorization Center (CVV).

Warning signs and psychological distress

Psychological distress does not always appear directly, but may manifest through expressions of hopelessness, loss of meaning in life, social isolation, talk about death, unusual farewells, and changes in sleep or appetite. The World Health Organization points out that asking directly about suicidal thoughts does not increase the risk and can help reduce a person's anxiety.

The importance of non-judgmental listening

The core proposal of actions such as those by the Life Valorization Center emphasizes that listening means being present, requiring unhurried and non-judgmental attention. Avoiding judgment and welcoming those going through difficult times helps reinforce the perception that the person does not have to face their suffering alone.

Initiatives and public policies

Various bodies and institutions hold lectures, special programs, and debates to discuss mental health and the protection of vulnerable groups. Bills moving through legislative assemblies also propose guidelines for the early identification of anxiety and depression disorders, alongside actions aimed at the school environment and the use of tools like telemedicine.
