Samuel Juncal: doctor is target of search in operation against sexual crimes

Urologist Samuel Juncal became one of the most searched names online after the launch of Operation Bright Tomorrow by the Bahia Civil Police on Thursday (27). The operation aims to combat vulnerable rape, production and storage of child pornography in the state, and the professional was the subject of a search and seizure warrant at his residence in Salvador.

Operation Bright Tomorrow in Bahia

Coordinated by the Department for the Protection of Women, Citizenship and Vulnerable Persons (DPMCV), Operation Bright Tomorrow is a permanent action of the Bahia Civil Police. On Thursday (27), a new cycle of the operation mobilized about 120 police officers to serve judicial warrants in several locations. The actions took place in Salvador, Lauro de Freitas, Itagi, Seabra, São Félix and Conceição do Coité.

In the state capital, the diligences were carried out in neighborhoods such as Barra, Arraial do Retiro, Arenoso, Costa Azul, Ilha Amarela, Santa Cruz, Calabetão, Pernambués, Fazenda Grande do Retiro, Vila Laura and Paripe. Investigations also focus on crimes committed in the digital environment, with the seizure of electronic devices and data analysis to identify perpetrators and criminal networks. This cycle of the operation runs from August 24 to 28.

Doctor Samuel Juncal and the investigation

Samuel Juncal, a urologist, was identified as the physician under investigation in Operation Bright Tomorrow. He is suspected of vulnerable rape, production and storage of child pornography. On the morning of Thursday (27), police executed a search and seizure warrant at Juncal's home in Barra, Salvador, a wealthy area of the capital. The purpose was to collect evidence and assets related to the case. No arrest warrant was issued against the doctor.

Amid the investigation, Samuel Juncal deactivated his social media accounts. On Instagram he had about two thousand followers and used the platforms to publish content related to men's health. The doctor is married and has a daughter.

The urologist's defense

In a statement, Samuel Juncal's defense said the urologist is innocent and that the accusations are unfounded and defamatory. The defense emphasized that the suspect maintains unrestricted and transparent cooperation with the authorities and the judiciary to restore the truth. It also claimed that the search and seizure measure was completely unnecessary and disproportionate, given the doctor's consistent collaboration with investigative bodies. The defense clarified that on August 12, 17 and 20, witnesses who could attest to the doctor's innocence were indicated to the Police Station.

Other targets of the operation

Operation Bright Tomorrow resulted in the arrest of seven people in total. Four of those arrests were carried out in Salvador. Among the detained and investigated are a man accused of filming sexual abuse of five victims, who would be his godson, nephews and cousins; a retired military police officer suspected of abusing five victims, including a godson, nephews and cousins; and a 24‑year‑old man suspected of vulnerable rape, production of content and storage of child pornography, with investigations pointing to at least three victims with family ties.

Samuel Juncal's professional profile

Samuel Juncal graduated from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and has an academic trajectory with specializations and internships in Brazil and abroad. He completed residencies in general surgery and urology, as well as a master’s and doctorate in the field. He also trained in laparoscopic and robotic surgery in Germany and the United States. The doctor served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Surgery at the State University of Bahia (UNEB) and as a preceptor at Professor Edgar Santos University Hospital. He currently practices at Hospital Aliança, a D’Or network unit located in Rio Vermelho.
