In recent weeks, drivers have been fined at checkpoints even while presenting their National Driver's License (CNH) or Vehicle Registration and Licensing Certificate (CRLV) in digital format. The reason is the inability to prove the authenticity of the document when the driver uses only a photo or a screenshot saved on their phone.

Validity of the digital CNH versus saved photos

The digital CNH has legal validity throughout the national territory, provided it is accessed through the official Digital Traffic Wallet (CDT) app. A screenshot or photograph of the license does not have the validation mechanisms that the app provides and can be rejected by the officer during the stop.

When lack of battery or device failure prevents presentation

Problems such as a dead phone, a damaged screen, or an app failure prevent the digital CNH from being viewed. In these cases, if the officer cannot confirm the license through the computerized system, the infraction outlined in Article 232 of the Brazilian Traffic Code may be applied, resulting in an R$ 88.38 fine and three points on the driver's license.

Officer procedure when document display is impossible

If the driver fails to present the digital CNH or CRLV, the officer can check the status directly in the electronic databases by entering the license plate or the driver's registration number. This check confirms whether the license or registration is up to date, avoiding a fine for failing to carry the document.

e-CRLV and license plate checks

The e-CRLV, also available in the CDT app, follows the same logic as the digital CNH. When the driver cannot open the document, the officer uses systems such as Sinesp Cidadão to verify the vehicle's licensing status. If the vehicle is licensed, the failure to present the digital document does not result in a fine; the penalty only applies if the licensing is overdue.

Recommended precautions to avoid fines

  • Keep your phone charged and in good condition before long trips.
  • Install and properly configure the CDT app, ensuring that the CNH and CRLV are available offline.
  • Do not rely on photographs or screenshots stored in your gallery; always use the official version within the app.
  • Test access to the document and your password or biometrics before leaving home.
  • Periodically check that the app is updated and that your data connection is working.

By following these guidelines, drivers significantly reduce the risk of being fined at a checkpoint, even when technology experiences momentary failures.
