Pogacar Abandons Vuelta After Serious Crash

On Saturday morning, during the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España, race leader Tadej Pogacar suffered an accident that forced him to abandon the race. The incident occurred approximately 33 km from the finish of the stage, when the cyclist lost control while swerving to the right and fell over his handlebars.

The Crash That Took Pogacar Out of the Vuelta

Videos showed Pogacar with cuts to his head, left arm, and shoulder after the fall. He attempted to get back on his bike but felt severe shoulder pain and walked to the ambulance. The organization confirmed that the Slovenian had withdrawn from the race.

Diagnosed Injuries and Need for Surgery

UAE Team Emirates medical director, Dr. Adrian Rotunno, reported that Pogacar was diagnosed with a concussion, a stable C7 fracture (cervical spine), a displaced left collarbone fracture, and multiple abrasions. The doctor added that while there were no other serious injuries or neurological impairment, surgery would be required to repair the collarbone, to be performed after the precautionary period due to the concussion.

Consequences for the Vuelta Standings

Before the crash, Pogacar led the general classification with a 3 min 50 s advantage over Spaniard Enric Mas. With his withdrawal, Mas took the lead, becoming the first Spaniard to wear the red jersey since 2018. Felix Gall moved into second place, 1 min 11 s behind Mas, while Primož Roglič maintained third position.

Team and Competitor Reactions

Matxin Joxean Fernandez, the team's sports manager, emphasized that the accident was “one of those things that happen in cycling.” He reported that Pogacar received stitches for his eyebrow and that the decision to abandon was made due to shoulder pain. Enric Mas, upon receiving the red jersey, stated that the situation was “a real sadness” for Pogacar and wished him a swift recovery.

Next Steps for the Cyclist

Pogacar remains under the team's medical care and will receive updates after surgery. The accident marks the first time the cyclist has abandoned a Grand Tour, interrupting his attempt to complete the set of the three major road cycling tournaments. The team has not yet announced when the athlete will be able to return to competition, but hopes for a full recovery for future challenges, such as the Road World Championships in June.
