Mahershala Ali confirms end of Blade and thanks Marvel

Mahershala Ali publicly confirmed that his involvement in the Blade reboot has been terminated. The actor stated that the project "is over for me" and revealed that the combat training paid for by Marvel was repurposed for another production.

Statement at the Toronto Festival

During the Toronto Film Festival, Mahershala Ali gave an interview to Deadline and was emphatic about the end of his participation in the Marvel film. He said he will not play the character and is focused on other projects. "It's over for me. I'm doing this here and anything else from now on, so that's it, it's done. It's over for me," the actor declared.

The comment came while Ali was promoting the film "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother," in which he stars alongside director Bassam Tariq. The production is part of the festival lineup and served as the backdrop for the revelations about the future of the vampire hunter.

Reuse of the training

Ali revealed that he trained for a year to portray Blade. That preparation period, which included learning hand‑to‑hand combat and swordplay, was financed by Marvel Studios. The actor explained that without that contribution he wouldn't have been able to make his new film.

"They helped pay for our film, so thank you. Really, we wouldn't have had the money for it. We couldn't have made this film. And I was able to train for a year. So right now I'm very grateful that they made such a wonderful contribution to our film," said Ali. Director Bassam Tariq added that the training may have lasted longer than a year.

Context of the cancelled project

The Blade reboot was initially announced at San Diego Comic‑Con 2019. Since then, the project faced numerous changes and, in 2024, the cancellation was confirmed. Mahershala Ali never got to star in the feature, limiting his involvement to a brief voice cameo in the post‑credits scene of the movie "Eternals."

With the actor's departure, the Blade film remains in development at Marvel Studios, with no set production or release date. Industry expectations are that the project could re‑emerge in the future, possibly with a new cast, sometime after 2028 as part of the post‑Multiverse Saga plans.
