In a statement made in São Paulo, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that he will send to the United States president, Donald Trump, the most recent data on the decline of deforestation in the Amazon. The initiative aims to provide the American government with up‑to‑date information on the evolution of forest cover in the planet’s largest tropical rainforest.

Purpose of the communication

The transmission of deforestation figures aims to strengthen the exchange of information between Brazil and the United States, facilitating joint monitoring of environmental trends. By making these indicators available, the Brazilian administration demonstrates transparency regarding the results achieved by conservation policies in the Amazon region.

Context of the data exchange

Technical information exchanges between governments are common practice in international agreements addressing environmental issues. Deforestation data typically include metrics such as cleared area, recovery rate, and annual comparisons, allowing assessments of forest‑protection policies. Communication between leaders of countries with shared sustainability interests can contribute to the development of joint strategies.
