Duran is posting a batting average of just .196 over the last 30 games, which drops to .137 in his past 15 matchups and falls to .111 in his most recent seven games. The decline has been continuous since 2024, when he posted an OPS of .834 with 14 triples, 21 home runs and 34 stolen bases. In 2025 those figures fell to a .774 OPS, 13 triples, 16 home runs and 24 steals. This season his OPS has plunged to .614, with only four triples, though he still has 19 home runs and 18 successful steals out of 22 attempts.

Fierce competition for Boston’s outfield spots

Duran’s reduced playing time also stems from strong competition on the Red Sox roster. The outfield currently features Wilyer Abreu in right field, while Roman Anthony has returned from injury to take on a key role in the club’s plans. Ceddanne Rafaela, who is temporarily injured, is expected to reclaim center field once he’s healthy, further lessening the need for Duran to start daily.

Player’s future and team plans

During the previous trade window, Duran was considered a trade candidate as Boston appeared to need to move an outfielder. Since no deal materialized, the team kept him on the roster through the end of the season before recalibrating its long‑term strategy.
