The South American football world turns its eyes to Ecuador this Tuesday, August 25, 2026, when Independiente del Valle and Deportes Tolima meet to decide the last berth in the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter‑finals. The tie, which had been pending due to the postponement of the second leg, will finally be settled and will determine Flamengo's opponent, the 2025 champion.

The postponed spot decision

The second‑leg of the round of 16 between Independiente del Valle and Deportes Tolima was delayed after a strong earthquake struck Colombia. The quake, which occurred near San José del Palmar in the west of the country at a depth of 110 km, left more than 100 dead. A 5.0‑magnitude aftershock – the strongest recorded in the nation in the last decade – was felt about an hour later. The epicenter is roughly 230 km from Bogotá and about 150 km from Medellín and Cali.

The showdown will now be played at Estadio Banco Guayaquil in Ecuador at 19:30 local time, which corresponds to 21:30 Brasília time. The match referee will be Darío Herrera from Argentina, with Hernán Mastrángelo, also Argentine, serving as VAR.

Scenarios for qualification

Independiente del Valle comes into the second leg with a 1‑0 advantage from the first match in Colombia. The winning goal was a header by Arón Rodríguez after a cross from Emerson Pata at Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro. With that result, the Ecuadorian side advances to the quarter‑finals with either a win or a draw.

Deportes Tolima, on the other hand, needs a two‑goal (or more) victory to qualify outright within 90 minutes. If the Colombian team wins by a single goal, the tie will be decided by a penalty shoot‑out.

Independiente del Valle’s home strength

The ‘Matagigantes’, as Independiente del Valle is known, will try to cement its advantage on its own ground, where it built a perfect record during the group stage. The side won all three home games, scoring eight goals and conceding only two, a performance that secured first place in Group H ahead of Rosario Central.

In the first leg, Tolima goalkeeper Aldair Quintana was a key figure, making important saves after the Ecuadorian goal. The ‘Pijao’ also had a chance to equalise when Junior Hernández struck a free‑kick that hit the post, but could not convert the dominance into a goal.

The long road of Deportes Tolima

The Colombian representative had a longer journey in the competition. Before reaching the round of 16, Tolima overcame Deportivo Táchira and O’Higgins in the preliminary phases and later secured second place in Group B. After ten matches in the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores, the team now seeks its second away win to extend its run among the continent’s top 16.

Flamengo awaits its opponent

Flamengo, the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores champion, is already guaranteed a quarter‑final spot after eliminating Cruzeiro with a 3‑2 aggregate score. The Rio de Janeiro club is the only one among the eight that still does not know its next opponent. The first‑leg quarter‑final games are scheduled for September 8–10.

According to reports, the club plans a combined trip after its match against Remo in Belém on September 6, heading straight to Ecuador or Colombia. If Independiente del Valle advances, Flamengo will face Quito’s altitude of 2,850 metres at Estadio Banco Guayaquil. Should Tolima qualify, the itinerary will involve a flight to Bogotá followed by a nearly 200‑kilometre bus ride to Ibagué’s Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro. In both scenarios, CONMEBOL’s approval for stadium use is still pending.
