Escape from Alcatraz on air on Globo

This Sunday's Cinemaço will air the 1979 classic, Escape from Alcatraz, which tells the true story of Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers. The production was released in 1979 and achieved recognition for its realistic approach.

What happens in the movie

Clint Eastwood plays Frank Morris, an inmate who, upon arriving at the maximum-security prison of Alcatraz, observes the strict discipline and constant surveillance. He begins studying the penitentiary's structure and identifying weaknesses in the security system. With the help of other prisoners, he develops a risky plan to escape the island.

Details of the escape

The plan requires patience, creativity, and careful work to avoid discovery by the guards. The inmates use improvised tools to open passages in the cell walls and build a raft using materials available in the prison. The escape involves braving cold waters, ocean currents, and the distance to the mainland.

Based on true events

In June 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin disappeared from the penitentiary after months of planning. Authorities investigated the possibility of death during the crossing, but there is no definitive confirmation regarding the fate of the fugitives.

Cast and direction

Besides Eastwood, the cast features Patrick McGoohan as the prison warden and Robert Blossom as inmate Doc. Don Siegel's direction explores the enclosed spaces of the penitentiary, the isolation of the inmates, and constant surveillance to create an atmosphere of suspense.

Why the movie is trending now

The broadcast of the classic on Cinemaço brought back the story of the 1962 escape, an episode that remains one of the most famous in the history of the American prison system. The attention to the escape planning and the difficulties faced by the inmates makes the movie a benchmark in the genre of suspense about prisons and escape attempts.
