The first film in the saga tells the origin of the Targaryen dynasty
The franchise that conquered the television world is getting ready for a new chapter in theaters. The feature film Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, which chronicles the conquest of Westeros by the first Targaryen, is scheduled to premiere in 2029.
Game of Thrones hits theaters in 2029
The film, which already has a release date of June 1, 2029, marks the first time Aegon I appears on screen. The production, based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, features Owen Harris, who has directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and screenwriter Beau Willimon.
What the story will show
The plot follows the campaign of Aegon I Targaryen, along with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, to unite six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros under Targaryen rule. Dorne remains independent. The conquest is led by the three legendary dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes.
How the film fits into the franchise
Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is part of the universe created by Martin and complements the two existing spin-off series: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The former was released in 2026, receiving a Best Drama Series nomination at the 2026 Emmys, and the latter has been renewed for a second season arriving in 2027. House of the Dragon, in turn, has its fourth season slated for 2028.
Distribution and release schedule
The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which has already secured the June 1, 2029 release date. Paramount, which will handle the theatrical releases of 40 Warner films through 2029, maintains the schedule, which includes only two other productions with set titles for the same year: Coco 2, on November 21, and Avatar 4, on December 21.
Franchise relevance outside of HBO
The decision to bring the saga to the big screen demonstrates the intention to keep the Game of Thrones universe relevant beyond the original series. The franchise already spanned eight seasons on HBO from 2011 to 2019 and continues to draw attention with new productions and the highly anticipated film.
