Incident Involving 189 Passengers Leads to Emergency Stop and Rescheduled Flight to Seattle
On Saturday night, a Delta flight departing from Kahului, Maui, en route to Seattle was diverted to Honolulu after the crew observed smoke in the cabin shortly after takeoff. The incident caused symptoms of headache and nausea in some passengers, who were attended to by emergency teams at the airport.

Flight 394, operated by an Airbus A321neo, was carrying 189 passengers when, just minutes after departure, the crew detected smoke. Following safety procedures, the captain opted to return to Hawaii and land at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.
Passenger Reactions and Medical Attention
Upon arrival in Honolulu, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) teams were called around 11 PM to attend to passengers reporting headaches and nausea. Three women, aged 42, 27, and 31, were treated and transported to an emergency room in stable condition. Federal Fire Police also attended and transported one additional patient, also stable.
Crew Procedures and Aircraft Inspection
Delta reported that the crew followed protocols by diverting the aircraft and that technicians are already inspecting it. The substance responsible for the smoke and the cause of the problem have not yet been identified and will be analyzed in conjunction with aviation authorities.
Operational Impact and Flight Reaccommodation
After landing, passengers disembarked via air stairs and were transported by bus to waiting areas. The airline provided a replacement aircraft, scheduled to depart from Honolulu the following morning bound for Seattle, allowing travelers to continue their journey.
Delta's Statement
In a statement, Delta emphasized that the safety of customers and crew is a priority and that it is issuing refunds and contacting passengers directly to apologize for the experience. The company also highlighted that it will continue to collaborate with authorities to conclude the investigation.
