The classic match between Flamengo and Fluminense will be played this Sunday at Maracanã, where the recently replaced pitch still shows irregularities that affect first touches, according to Flu's coach, Marcão. The game holds direct importance in the race for the Campeonato Brasileiro title.

Pitch Still Adjusting After Recent Replacement

The stadium management reported that the pitch was replaced less than ten days ago, the minimum period established by Greenleaf, the company responsible for maintenance. Full leveling and settlement of the grass mats are still pending, which leaves the ball “lively” and hinders play, according to Marcão and forward Kevin Serna.

Impact on the Spectacle and Team Strategies

Marcão highlighted that the pitch's condition might hinder first touches, but he believes that improvement will be noticeable in upcoming games, starting with Sunday's Fla-Flu. Using the pitch aids in its settlement, however, areas near the goals and the West stand remain isolated to preserve the field.

Flamengo Loses Advantage in the Brasileiro

In the previous round, Flamengo drew with Santos after leading by two goals, reducing their lead over Fluminense from ten to eight points. The Tricolor, who defeated Coritiba 4-0, returned to third place and regained mathematical chances of winning the title, according to calculations from the Infobola portal.

Direct Confrontation Could Shorten the Gap

If Fluminense defeats Flamengo this Sunday, the Rubro-Negro's advantage will be reduced to seven points, further tightening the dispute between the two clubs. Palmeiras, according to the same calculation, has a 36% chance of being champions, while Flamengo leads with 63%.

Upcoming Fixtures at Maracanã

Fluminense has five remaining home games at Maracanã, including clashes against Santos, Internacional, Mirassol, and Cruzeiro. Flamengo, in turn, will also have matches at the stadium, reinforcing the importance of an adequate pitch for the spectacle of the competition.
