The celebration of Our Lady of Aparecida Day, Brazil's patron saint, this Monday (October 12th), significantly alters the operation of various public services and commercial establishments across the country. As a national holiday, many offices and services will have their hours suspended or modified, leading citizens to seek information about the availability of essential and non-essential services.

National Holiday Impacts Service Operations

The Our Lady of Aparecida holiday, on October 12th, is a date that traditionally changes routines in several Brazilian cities. Essential services, such as emergency care, public cleaning, traffic inspection and guidance, surveillance, and rescue, generally maintain normal operation or on-call shifts. However, most non-essential public offices suspend their activities.

Public Offices and Banks: What Closes

Due to the national holiday, banks and non-essential public offices will be closed. In Greater Vitória, for example, the Glória Fashion Hub will also be closed. In Fortaleza, Etufor (Fortaleza Urban Transport Company) service points in Vapt Vupt units and other service centers, as well as Etufor's headquarters, will have public service suspended. In-person service and the Vehicle Patio of the Municipal Traffic and Citizenship Authority (AMC) will also be closed. Clínica Veterinária Jacó in Fortaleza will not be open, and VetMóveis do not operate on Mondays.

Health, Security, and Social Assistance: On-Call Shifts Maintained

Despite the holiday, health, security, and social assistance services will maintain on-call shifts to serve the population. In Fortaleza, 11 health centers will be open between Saturday and Monday (Oct 10-12), with nine offering health care, multi-vaccination, and pharmacies, and two dedicated exclusively to vaccination. The city's 12 Urgent Care Units (UPAs) will operate 24 hours, in addition to the Fortaleza Children's Hospital (HCF) for pediatric emergencies. Surgical and traumatological emergency cases can be attended to at the Frotinhas in the Antônio Bezerra, Parangaba, and Messejana neighborhoods and at the Dr. José Frota Institute (IJF). Urgent obstetric and gynecological care will be provided at the Dr. Zilda Arns Neumann Hospital and Maternity (Women's Hospital), Hospital Nossa Senhora da Conceição, and the Gonzaguinhas in the José Walter, Barra do Ceará, and Messejana neighborhoods. In Greater Vitória, specific health centers will operate for minor health issues, and the Urgent Care Units (PAs) of São Pedro and Praia do Suá will be on call 24 hours, as will the Psychosocial Care Centers (Caps) for Alcohol and Other Drugs in Ilha de Santa Maria and São Pedro. Civil Defense and the Guardianship Council will also maintain readiness schemes.

Commerce and Leisure with Special Hours

Supermarkets and shopping centers in various regions will operate with special hours on October 12th. In Greater Vitória, most shopping mall food courts will open from 11 AM to 10 PM, while stores will have alternative hours, generally from 2 PM to 9 PM, with some potentially extending. Supermarkets like Perim, Extrabom, Extraplus, Atacado Vem, Sam's Club, Carrefour, Atacadão, Carone, and Sempre Tem will operate with reduced hours, generally from 8 AM to 6 PM or 11 AM to 9 PM. In Fortaleza, municipal markets will have varied operating hours: Mercado Carlito Pamplona, for example, will open from 7 AM to 1 PM, while Mercado dos Peixes Vila do Mar and Mercado do Mucuripe will operate from 7 AM to 10 PM. Some markets, like those in Parangaba and Montese, will be closed.

Transportation and Markets: Details in Fortaleza

For public transportation in Fortaleza, Etufor will reinforce operations on October 12th. In total, 47 bus lines will have additional vehicles added to their fleet, and 33 reserve vehicles will be available at integration terminals from 5 AM to 8 PM. Information on routes and schedules is available on the Meu Ônibus Fortaleza application. The Municipal Traffic and Citizenship Authority (AMC) will operate normally 24 hours a day for operation, inspection, and patrolling. Traffic incidents can be reported via 190, from the Integrated Security Operations Coordination (Ciops). For complaints to Agefis, the Fiscalize Fortaleza application or Central 156 are available, as there will be no direct public service.
