On Thursday morning (27), Daniel Vorcaro, former owner of Banco Master, participated in a testimony to the Federal Police via videoconference. The act follows a change of lawyer and the rejection of two plea bargain proposals, which has increased public interest in the case.

What Motivated Vorcaro's Testimony

The testimony comes amidst an investigation probing Vorcaro's relationship with two Central Bank employees – Paulo Sérgio Neves de Souza and Bellini Santana – suspected of receiving financial advantages and acting in favor of the former banker during the liquidity crisis that culminated in the liquidation of Banco Master.

Main Accusations Against Central Bank Employees

According to reports from the Central Bank's Inspection Director, Ailton de Aquino, Bellini Santana allegedly received two installments of R$ 500,000 and monthly payments through a company he created, while Paulo Sérgio allegedly sold a rural property for R$ 4.5 million to a buyer with family ties to Vorcaro. The investigations seek to clarify whether these payments were linked to the inspectors' actions in supervising Banco Master.

Context of Banco Master's Liquidation

The Central Bank removed Master from the market after determining that credit portfolios presented by the institution did not exist. The decision was kept within a restricted circle, and messages analyzed by the Federal Police show that Vorcaro was seeking liquidity lines from the Credit Guarantee Fund to avoid greater impacts.

Details of Vorcaro's Arrest

Vorcaro has been preventively detained since June at the 19th Military Police Battalion (BPM), known as Papudinha. He serves his sentence in a cell of about 60 square meters, shares space with former president Jair Bolsonaro, has access to a gym, and receives visits from his mother and children once a week. His routine includes reading the Bible, physical exercises, and restricted contact with other inmates, such as the former president of BRB, Paulo Henrique Costa.

Expectations Regarding the Testimony

Vorcaro's defenders hope that the testimony will present the former banker's version regarding the suspicions involving Central Bank employees. The Federal Police intends to confront the elements gathered throughout the investigation, including possible payments, exchange of internal information, and undue favoritism during the supervision of Banco Master.
