Terra Roxa Clinic Targeted in Operation Over Alleged Torture of Women

A joint operation carried out on Tuesday (15) by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraná (MPPR) and Gaeco resulted in the temporary arrest of managers of a therapeutic clinic in Terra Roxa, western Paraná, on charges of violating human rights.

What prompted the operation

Investigations indicate that the facility held around 72 women, including people with disabilities, deprived of their freedom and barred from leaving. Suspicions include forced solitary confinement, physical abuse, and the systematic use of sedatives to induce unconsciousness.

Conditions at the clinic

According to the MPPR, the management model imposed severe disciplinary sanctions, such as prohibiting family visits, mandating unpaid internal labor, and denying basic medical aid. Patients were threatened to keep them from reporting the facility's routine.

Use of sedatives and informal name

The suspects allegedly administered sedatives by force, informally referring to them as “Danone.” The medication was reportedly given to keep patients unconscious, making them easier to control.

Police actions and seizures

Arrest, search, and seizure warrants were served at the clinic’s headquarters, rural residences of the suspects, and associated vehicles. During the searches, teams located unregistered firearms and ammunition, resulting in in flagrante arrests. Seized cell phones and computers will be analyzed following judicial authorization to lift confidentiality.

Legal measures taken

The local Criminal Court issued a 30-day temporary arrest warrant for the clinic's manager. The measure aims to ensure the continuity of the investigations and identify others potentially involved in the alleged abuses.
