Scientists identified an unusual link between low vitamin D levels in the body and pain intensity. In a study of 184 women who underwent mastectomy—the surgical removal of the breast for cancer treatment—the deficiency of this vitamin may make postoperative recovery considerably more painful for patients.
The research data reveal that patients lacking vitamin D had a three‑fold higher chance of experiencing moderate to severe pain during the first 24 hours after the surgical procedure. This group also required a substantially larger amount of tramadol, an opioid analgesic used to control intense pain.
Medication use and postoperative symptoms
In addition to increased tramadol consumption after surgery, patients with low vitamin D levels received a slightly higher dose of fentanyl (another potent opioid analgesic) during the operation itself. The study also indicated that these women reported more episodes of nausea following the procedure.
