Scientist dies after infection in Irkutsk region
Nearly two hundred people are under medical observation after the death of a laboratory worker.
Nearly two hundred people were placed under medical observation in the Irkutsk region of Siberia after a laboratory worker died from an infection caused by a form of plague. The situation prompted emergency containment measures and the isolation of a hospital in the area.
Death of laboratory worker
The deceased woman was identified as an employee of Irkutsk's anti-plague institute. Reports indicate she was handling samples for testing when she said she accidentally broke a test tube containing live bacteria. She was hospitalized with severe pneumonia symptoms, placed on mechanical ventilation, and died the following day.
Quarantine and contact isolation
At least one hundred ninety‑seven people who may have been in contact with the worker were placed under medical isolation, including more than one hundred in hospital wards. The district hospital where she was treated went into quarantine until a special commission completes its assessment. Authorities also cancelled planned public events in the region and opened a criminal investigation into possible safety breaches.
Control measures and authorities
Russia's chief sanitary surveillance officer coordinated emergency containment actions in the area. The regional governor urged calm among the population after meeting with health officials to coordinate the response. Individuals identified as contacts of the victim remain under medical observation and, so far, have tested negative with no signs of illness.
Details about the infection
While some sources and officials described the case as a dangerous infection or an unspecified form of plague, media reports point to a suspicion of pneumonic plague, which affects the lungs and can spread between humans via respiratory droplets.
