He was leading Ypiranga's preparations for the Pernambucano Championship.
Brazilian football mourns the loss of Carlos Alberto Dias, former player and coach, who passed away this Monday (5) at the age of 59. The news, confirmed by Ypiranga, the Santa Cruz do Capibaribe club where he was working as a coach, generated great commotion and interest in his career.
The Passing of Carlos Alberto Dias
Carlos Alberto Dias, who was leading Ypiranga's preparations for the 2026/2027 Pernambucano Championship, began feeling unwell on Saturday (3), experiencing fatigue, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, and was medicated. On Sunday (4) morning, with symptoms persisting, he was admitted to the UPA in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe and discharged after improving. However, on the same day, around 10 PM, he felt unwell again, this time with chest pain. He returned to the health unit and, after a new evaluation, was transferred to Hospital Mestre Vitalino in Caruaru for a cardiological assessment, but did not survive. The official cause of death was not disclosed. Ypiranga reported that it accompanied the coach during his treatment and provided assistance.
Health History and Final Days
The coach had a recent history of heart problems. In January of this year, Carlos Alberto Dias had to step down from coaching Humaitá, in Acre, just days after the start of pre-season, due to health issues. At the time, the president of the Acre club reported that the coach had undergone a stent placement procedure in his heart and needed rest, returning to Rio de Janeiro to take care of his health. He had been announced by Ypiranga in July to lead the team and began working with the squad in September, conducting preparations for the State Championship.
A Distinguished Playing Career
Before dedicating himself to coaching, Carlos Alberto Dias built a notable career as a midfielder. He played for the four major clubs in Rio de Janeiro – Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, and Vasco – in addition to defending teams like Grêmio, Paraná, Ceará, and Coritiba. For Botafogo, he scored the winning goal in the 1990 Carioca title and was Brazilian runner-up in 1992. Carlos Alberto Dias also represented the Brazilian national team, playing two friendly matches in 1992.
The Transition to the Sidelines
After ending his playing career, Carlos Alberto Dias embraced coaching. He managed clubs such as Gama, Castanhal, Frei Paulistano, Guaporé, and Humaitá before taking over Ypiranga, known as "The Sewing Machine." In an interview after joining the club, the coach expressed satisfaction in working in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe and emphasized his intention to bring Ypiranga back to national competitions, also advocating for the use of youth academy players in the professional squad.
