Braves vs Phillies: what's at stake in the decisive MLB matchup

The baseball world turns its attention to the decisive Game 3 of the National League wild‑card series, where the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies face off in an all‑or‑nothing duel. Thursday’s game will determine which team moves on to meet the Los Angeles Dodgers in the next playoff round, generating huge interest and making “braves” one of the most searched topics.

What’s at stake in the series

The wild‑card series is tied 1‑1 after an exhilarating Phillies win in Game 2. Philadelphia saved its season on Wednesday with a 4‑3 triumph over division rival Atlanta. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper delivered back‑to‑back home runs to knot the game at 3‑3 in the eighth inning. Then rookie right‑hander Andrew Painter threw three scoreless innings in his playoff debut, and Alec Bohm hit a solo homer in the tenth, sealing the victory.

The winner of the decisive showdown will face the Los Angeles Dodgers, two‑time World Series champions, in the NLDS. The Braves, this year’s NL East champions, are looking to win their first playoff series since capturing the World Series in 2021. During that span, the Phillies have eliminated Atlanta twice: first in the 2022 NLDS and again in the 2023 NLDS.

Mountaintop duels

For Game 3, Philadelphia will start veteran right‑hander Aaron Nola, the club’s longest‑tenured pitcher. The Atlanta Braves will open with left‑hander Ray Kerr but may quickly hand the ball to right‑hander Grant Holmes. The Phillies could also bring right‑hander Zack Wheeler in as a reliever.

Where to watch the decisive game

Game 3 between the Phillies and the Braves is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. The contest will be played at Truist Park in Atlanta. Fans can tune in via the Peacock TV/live‑stream channel.
