Brazilian man arrested in Miami dressed as US immigration officer
Danilo Silva, 46, used a fake uniform bought online to intimidate voters at a polling station in Florida.
A 46-year-old Brazilian man was arrested in Miami, Florida, after dressing up as an officer from the country's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a polling station for the Brazilian elections. Danilo Silva's actions occurred last Sunday (4) and mobilized local law enforcement following reports of voter intimidation. The incident led to the suspect being caught in the act and arrested; he now faces multiple charges in US court.
Details on the confrontation and the outfit worn
Silva was walking around Miami Dade College's Kendall campus wearing a cap and jacket with ICE identification, as well as sunglasses, a face mask, and tactical boots. According to the police report from the Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office, he was walking in an intimidating manner through the buildings where the Brazilian voting was taking place. The man's goal, according to authorities, was to approach people and instill fear in the voters present.
Police intervention and the suspect's justification
The suspicious activity prompted uniformed officers and plainclothes detectives from the Homeland Security Bureau to monitor the area. After Danilo Silva was confronted by men at the scene and a filmed argument broke out, investigators intervened. When questioned, the Brazilian admitted he was not a federal agent and claimed the clothes were just a costume purchased online through Amazon. He stated that he had voted earlier wearing a Brazilian national soccer team jersey and later changed clothes in his car just to "see people's reactions."
Threat to investigators and attempted bribery
During the police confrontation, the suspect became agitated as he was handcuffed and placed in the patrol car. According to the police report, Silva threatened one of the investigators, claiming he would regret the decision to arrest him. Soon after, the Brazilian changed his demeanor and attempted to bribe the officers to secure his release. He offered money to the agents and said he could show the financial transfer directly on his cell phone screen.
Criminal charges and the Brazilian's legal status
Danilo Silva was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He was formally charged with voter intimidation, attempted bribery, unlawful use of law enforcement badges, and disorderly conduct. As of Monday (5), the local court had not set a bail amount for the voter intimidation charge. For the other charges, the amount was set at $2,650, equivalent to approximately R$ 13,000. Silva's defense could not be reached for comment.
