On August 4, 2026, during the first night of three shows in Chicago, Ariana Grande, 33, explained that her decision to “step back from visibility” was planned long ago and was not an impulsive act.

Decision to reduce public exposure

The artist read notes to the audience, stating: “The announcement that was made yesterday was not a reactive or impulsive thing. It is something that I had decided to plan quietly, a long time ago.” She highlighted that the constant media focus on aspects such as her weight motivated the need to set boundaries.

Motivations and feelings

Grande explained that she heard fans' concerns about negativity: “I heard my fans were worried negativity was ruining things for me but that could not be more than the opposite.” According to her, “Boundaries need to be set, human beings do need a break sometimes.” The singer added that the decision comes from “a thoughtful and empowered place.”

Reaction to the “Petal” video

The title-track video, released the previous week, shows the artist wielding a chainsaw against critics, symbolizing frustration with public expectations. When shared on Instagram, the video received a community note that directed people with eating disorders to support resources.

Theatrical projects suspended

Grande confirmed she will withdraw from the production of “Sunday in the Park with George” by Stephen Sondheim at the Barbican in London, scheduled for next summer, where she would have shared the stage with Jonathan Bailey, her co-star from “Wicked.”

Next steps of the tour

The artist described the tour as “one of the most healing, beautiful, correct and special experiences” of her life. After the series of shows in the United States, the schedule continues with a ten-night residency at the O2 Arena in London, starting August 15.
