Ambulance Accident Involving Samu Stirs Outrage in Sergipe

An accident involving an ambulance of the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) and a truck loaded with bricks shocked the rural area of Poço Redondo, Sergipe, stirring intense public outcry and expanding the search for information about ambulances in the country. The crash, which occurred on July 31, resulted in two deaths and left several people injured, generating national media coverage.

Accident between ambulance and truck in Poço Redondo

According to the Military Fire Brigade of Sergipe, the ambulance was transferring a patient when the driver tried to avoid a cow that was on the road. The vehicle collided with a truck carrying masonry blocks, causing the ambulance to overturn and the truck and the animal to be displaced off the roadway.

Causes identified by the fire department

The official report indicates that the attempt to evade the cow was the immediate factor that triggered the collision. The impact between the ambulance and the truck, which was transporting construction materials, was sufficient to send both vehicles off the road, culminating in the ambulance’s rollover.

Victims and injured

Among the dead were the ambulance driver, Aelmo Santos da Graça, 40, the nursing technician Maria Eulália Vieira da Silva, 58, and the patient José Bemvindo da Silva, 74. Six other people were injured, including occupants of the ambulance and three passengers from the truck, who were rescued and taken to hospital facilities.

Family and colleagues' farewell

Aelmo Santos' wake took place in the town of Cumbe, about 90 km from Aracaju, where he was born. The procession moved through local streets to the cemetery, where he was buried beside his wife and two children. Friends, family members, and coworkers paid tribute to the driver.

Reaction of the health department

The State Health Secretariat (SES) issued a statement of sorrow, expressing solidarity with the victim’s family, friends, and colleagues. The message highlighted the pain of the loss and acknowledged the service rendered by the professionals involved in the accident.
