Brazilian Academy announces six candidates for the 2027 Oscar

The Brazilian Film Academy announced this Tuesday (9) the six films that will compete for Brazil's spot in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars. The list was released to the public shortly before the Academy's awards ceremony, which this year also accepts works that have won major awards at prestigious festivals.

The titles vying for the 2027 Oscar

The announced films are: "Feito Pipa" by Allan Deberton; "Vicentina Pede Desculpas" by Gabriel Martins; "100 Dias" by Carlos Saldanha; "A Fabulosa Máquina do Tempo" by Eliza Capai; "Nosso Segredo" by Grace Passô; and "A Natureza das Coisas Invisíveis" by Rafael Camelo.

Themes and trajectories of the finalists

"Feito Pipa" follows the relationship between Gugu, a 12-year-old boy, and his grandmother Dilma, who is living with Alzheimer's. The feature film will be screened at the Toronto Film Festival and hits theaters on November 5, with its Netflix premiere at the end of the same month.

"Vicentina Pede Desculpas" follows Vicentina, the mother of a bus driver killed in an accident, as she seeks out the victims' families to ask for forgiveness. The film premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, has a national release on November 5, and arrives on Netflix on November 20.

"100 Dias" tells the story of Amyr Klink, the first Brazilian to cross the South Atlantic by rowboat, portrayed by Filipe Bragança. The production hits theaters on October 29.

"A Fabulosa Máquina do Tempo" features a group of girls who create an imaginary machine to revisit the stories of mothers and grandmothers, addressing evangelical religion, gender, and alcoholism. The film is currently in theaters.

"Nosso Segredo" follows a Black family attempting to rebuild their routine after the loss of the patriarch, exploring individual and collective grief. The feature film won the Kikito de Ouro at the Gramado Festival and is currently showing in cinemas.

"A Natureza das Coisas Invisíveis" narrates the friendship between two ten-year-old girls in a hospital, dealing with life, death, and discoveries. The film is available on Netflix.

Next steps in the selection process

The committee responsible for the selection will define Brazil's official representative at a meeting scheduled for September 16. The 2027 Oscar ceremony will take place on March 14, 2027.

Participation in international festivals

Some of the titles have already garnered recognition at festivals: "Vicentina Pede Desculpas" is participating in the Platform section at the Toronto Film Festival; "Feito Pipa" was screened at the Toronto Film Festival; "A Fabulosa Máquina do Tempo" competed for the Crystal Bear in the Generation Kplus section in Berlin; and "Nosso Segredo" won the Best Film award at the Gramado Festival.
